Long term (called ‘chronic’) stress is a serious issue and has been linked with serious illnesses such as cancer, heart attacks, ulcers, colitis and asthma to name but a few.
Overall it affects the body’s resources in a negative way, reducing the effectiveness of the immune system leaving us more susceptible to colds and flu and other infections.
So, if you’re experiencing chronic stress then this is going to require a major life and health review not just a quick fix. This means a trip to your GP in the first instance.
However, if you are getting mildly stressed at the moment then check out my tips on relaxation, lousy days, Monday morning feeling and also Dr Keith's answer on stress.
For a quick two minute stress buster then try this (assuming you do not suffer from breathing related ailments)...
Close your eyes and take a long slow deep breath
Fill your lungs as fully as you are able
As you breathe in, tense your body and pause for a few seconds
Now as you breathe out, relax your body and say mentally (or our loud) the word ‘relax’. Try to empty your lungs as much as possible
Do this seven times in all which should take about two minutes.
To gain the maximum benefit, it’s important to repeat this exercise throughout the day. Build it into your routine.
Used in this way it can help to interrupt the stress cycle. However, stress, overall is a signal to make life style changes, so let the commitment to doing this small exercise be just the start!
