How do I drag myself out of bed every morning?

The simplest solution is to get someone else to do it! If this is not just a Monday morning feeling then you need to ask yourself what are you not looking forward to?

Wanting to say in bed is a coping strategy. The prospect of unpleasant tasks often evoke negative emotions. Instead of tackling these problems at source, we often just go for the quick fix approach which involved just dealing with the emotion.

Other ways of quickly coping with negative emotions include food, drink, drugs and sex. Basically your rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle then.

When faced with a stressful situation, it triggers a reaction called the ‘fight or flight’ response. This means that we face the problem head on or else we get the hell out of there.

Staying in bed and hitting that snooze button is a ‘flight’ response. It’s running away from the negative feeling. If you are routinely faced with stress in your life, exercise is a good way of dealing with the fight of flight response.

However, like everything else, there has to be balance in your life. So hitting the gym every time you have the slightest problem might not be such a good idea.

Look at the bigger picture

Often an imbalance in one area of our lives has a knock on effect in another, so it’s good to take a holistic approach. That mean’s looking at diet, drinking habits, job, how you relax and so on.

Is it that you are physically tired or is it a lack of motivation? It also means checking out your perception of a situation. Often a problem or issue can be viewed from a number of different angles. Sometimes a simple change in perspective is enough to change the whole experience.

However let’s consider some physical aspects to the problem. Have you looked at your diet, alcohol intake, water intake and exercise regime? All of these can have an effect on your sleep patterns. You may be getting the recommended six to eight hours but is it good quality stuff?

It’s always a good idea to pack yourself off to the GP at least once a year for an ‘MOT’. Many GPs employ a nurse who will give you a basic health check.
