Thousands of emails have been sent to homes and offices across Britain from a website called gethasselhofftonumber1.com.
The aim is for people to register their email address with the site. Once 75,000 have signed up, they will be sent a further email telling them to buy his seminal 1990 classic “Looking For Freedom” from Apple's iTunes Music Store.
The anonymous website says: “Think what he's given to the world.
"Knight Rider, Baywatch, the reunification of East and West Germany. He's given a lot. It's time we gave something back.
"Let's help him out with something that would mean the world to him. Something that would repay all the goodness he's given us over the years.
"A glittering prize that thus far eludes him. A top spot in the UK music charts. Let's get Hoff to number one."
Amen to that!
