Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but the lad in question wasn't into txt spk (well he wasn't during the chat up).

Once they got onto the discussion on music (some band I'd never heard of) he said 'oh yes they're like totally amazing and inspiring'

Although I suspect with his mates later today he'll probably sound a lot more like you describe.

I feel I have to defend him - he gets points for trying in my book!

Haha, do you know when you're watching TV or something happens when you're not at work and you suddenly become Mr Expert like my friends dad who was a fireman and would sit through London's Burning remarking "Oh for gods sake, you'd never do it like that".

I can picture Dr Petra's life being over run by the constant urge to monitor every semblance of an encounter between two people whenever she's out.

"Oh for gods sake, you don't want to do it like that!"

Just for the record Dr P. I really liked what you said about just having little random chats with people. It's something I've always done but never really thought about it, having chats with people on checkouts/at bus stops/random people in pubs or where ever, it's definitely something that's helped my conversational skills and my confidence in general.

EDIT: Who was the band?

I can't remember the band, sorry :-(

Most of the time I don't find myself thinking about what people do or how they could do it better - mostly because I think part of life is muddling through and finding your own way and even if a so-called 'expert' tells you to do something it often doesn't work for you.

I have been known to approach people in the sex/relationships section in book shops and suggest a good book to read on sex rather than the rubbish one they're about to buy. This usually raises eyebrows and they probably think I'm a nutter.

Where I do get driven mad is when you see other people giving sex/relationship advice on TV or other media and you know it's crap, but since that's going on pretty much 24/7 I have to ignore it or I couldn't function.

I'm just naturally very nosy and I do like listening in on conversations and seeing how things play out.
