As the flood of data across the internet continues to increase, there are those that say sometime soon it is going to collapse under its own weight. Any thoughts?
I don't think it will collapse in the near future, or even in the enar distant future. Technology is getting better and better and will keep coping with all of this.
The problem will be the impact of extra radio waves from wireless technoogies, the increase in electricity needed if the issue of energy efficient systems isn't dealt with.
The issue will come to fruition when microtechnology options have been exhausted and we're no longer able to manipulate these to our advantage in any new ways. We studied this in 4th year inorganic chemistry.

I don't think that the Internet is near collapse or will happen anytime soon, if at all!
Firstly the Internet is now a major commercial device for many companies, as such they have a vested interested in making sure its viable and thus they invest in it. Some of the hardware that runs through the Internet is old and in the process of being updated. As the article mentions some of the older technology only becomes a problem when the main links are broken and the router sends the data down other pathways, however as the article pointed out it normally take a major disaster for this to occur, but the Internet still functions, albeit at a slower pace.
The theory of the Internet is simple, that it should work no matter what, it was designed from a defence perspective and while not fool proof by any means the basic point of the Internet was to allow communication even when some of it was not available. Therefore even when part of it breaks another part takes the load, if this part breaks another part takes the load etc, yes this does mean that each time part of the link breaks more pressure is put on smaller sections, but not all the world uses it at the same time to the same extent.
I read somewhere that the internet as we know it, it only 1/4 of what is actually out there, but is 'classified' If you have the correct security access you can view data on just about anyone or anything!

I think it was a book by an ex-CIA or KGB guy
