I got this yesterday ... and my eight year old beat me 34 - 3.
I would say it's definitely only worth playing with friends/other humanoids.

It's certainly much better in multiplayer, but no way is it totally without single player worth.
There's tonnes of trophies to win, and some real challenging opponents when you get to the latter stages of each competition.

... I obviously haven't got that far yet.
I thought it was really easy playing it solo and then my son came in and walloped me because he's played at a friends house.
