I don't mind about the size really- obviously smaller is preferable, but it's not a priority.
Waterproof isn't important.
Point and shoot- eh?
Like lots of manual options. I want to be able to play around with functions etc. Not just a simple flash on flash off cam.
My slightly biased opinion would be to go with somethign from pentax, I like all the options you get with them, like manual zoom and stuff. They take nice pics as well. Cannons are good as well since they are better at taking pictures in the dark. They are both quite small.
I can go a whole holiday and hundreds of shots on one set of batteries, without using the screen.
But then you don't see exactly what the pic is going to look like?!
That's the whole idea of digital - you can take hundreds of shots, and when you upload them, you only need keep the good ones! Peering at every shot just wastes battery power.

When I was travelling, I broke the screen on my camera, so I couldn't see any of the pics. Took a couple of surprisingly awesome ones, quite a lot were a bit naff. Was always interesting to see how they turned out, but I much prefer being able to see what I'm shooting and what it looks like.
I have 4 batteries for my camera, so I can go for a week or more without worrying about charging!

Not just use it like a normal camera and look through the eye piece.
I have used both Sony (P6) and Canon (Ixus 6MP) over the last few years (and olympus in film) and I can't say I favour the quality of one over the other. In terms of specification most cameras in a similar price bracket are around the same. Now I use Canon over sony for 2 simple reasons, my canon memory card (Sd) is compatible with my PDA and the canon feels better to hold.
The previous suggestion of going to a shop and having a play with the display camaras is the best option.
