A couple of travel questions....

I am going to California in September, and I have a couple of questions....

Which is the best website for finding cheap flights?

Is it cheaper to hire the car from the flight company, or to just fly over there and hire a car from the airport?

This is the first time I have hired a car, so dont want to be stung. I have always flown to places where I can wander round easily, without having to drive.

Thanks for the help...

Check for hire websites, it will probably be cheaper to hire it when you get there or with somebody else.

Make sure you bring your driving licence bits (duh).

The main thing is to check the hire contract, how much insurance excess do you pay etc? And also check for absolutely any damage on the car, and have it marked down, so they can't screw you over. Also esp. in america it will mostlikely be an automatic.

I hired a car in NZ and managed to blow the head gasket :S didn't have to pay for it though as it wasn't really my fault

I kept slamming on the brake everytime I tried to change gear :S

It's sort of nice when you get used to it, as you don't have to do any clutch control on hills and things, though overtaking can be painful! (we had a cheap toyota somethign or other for about £15/day)

Automatic cars should be compulsory. I love driving autos, unfortunately my present car had three pedals.

Hi

It's best to check around a couple of companies to give you best choice of fares.Normally not cheapest to go to just one airlines website. The earlier you book the cheaper the air fare on long haul scheduled routes.

Car Hire - again you can check Hertz / Avis etc but if you use someone like Holiday Autos all the prepayable stuff and Collission Damage is included when you book so much more peace of mind.

Some links for you to check and compare

Holiday Autos

Expedia

More flights to check price

Hope that helps
