I quite fancy a new little digital camera to replace my trusty Canon IXUS i, which is just over three years old, and has been great, but is so battered and bruised from many a night out, and it now only has 4MPs, which is well below the norm nowadays
My main uses are nights out, so it has to be compact and lightweight enought to go in the pocket of my jeans, and also robust enough to survive whereever I may end up!! haha Also, I do like to take some decent view shots, so I really want something with a decent optical zoom now (the proper extending lens thing, in case I have got confused)
A decent battery life, and ease of use are also pretty high up the list of essential features
Where are the best places to research?

I've only ever heard good things about Pixmania in terms of price and service. Not used them myself though. Avoid Curry's mind you. The most disgustingly rude service I've ever stumbled across.
I know close to bugger all about cameras, but there are a few sites I'd trust the reviews of. Pocket-Lint, of course for one. CNET too.
You've already got a canon, it is a well known and trustworthy brand. So why not stick with a working formula and just get a newer version of your current camera?
Get one with a traditional viewfinder, so that you don't end up squinting at a blank screen in the sunshine. You'll also find that the batteries last much longer as well.

Yeah, I've got a Canon Ixus 7.1 which is lovely. Got it off an ebay retailer, one of those Hong Kong dealers (Digitalrev).
Seems to have all the bits I need, or would want, and I can carry over my existing memory cards :)
Also, the bargainous price of the shop in Lancaster (£158) is massively undercut by Amazon.com (£124), and it will get Will some pennies if I buy through here, won't it!

Have a look at steves-digicams.com for excellent reviews of almost all digital cameras!
Canon IXUS are good choice.
If I were you, choose a specific digicam model, search for it at online stores like Amazon, ebuyer, etc. then print the product page out. Take it along to Jessops -- they might be able to match the price or even undercut it!
A better piece of mind than if the camera becomes defective within the warranty, it is alot of hassle sending it back to an online merchant.
