Most pints will cost £3+ quid but you can get them in a good pub called the festival tavern (my local) for £2. But that is a 10-15 min walk from town (3 mins in a taxi).
If you feel like venturing around, wonder down the royal mile before/after seeing the castle as it is a good place to go and there are bound to be pippers busking. .
oh yeah, we did a ghost tour as well. wasn't that scary though cos there was about 30 of us being dragged around graveyards.
I'd quite like to do something like that. Might get mistaken for a ghost though.

They all run from the Royal Mile and are pretty good. Some people get sick though due to a sensitvity due to sonic vibrations or something under the city.
Opal lounge is where all the rugby players etc go and why not is cheaper and cheesy.

The witchery is good but the most expensive place in town!
Loads of places do haggis, even pubs. I have gotten Haggis neeps and tatties in a couple of bars on the royal mile/behind waverely and it was good and cheap.

If my memory serves me correctly you can get haggis, 'neeps and tatties in Deacon Brodies' too which is at the junction of Bank Street, George IV Bridge and the High Street. I seem to remember it was nicely cooked there too and the upstairs restaurant is a nice place to go for a meal... You have to walk up past the bar and the stairs are towards the back...
Some of the places on Cockburn Street - down the High Street a bit towards John Knox' house - probably do it quite cheaply too...
@ PGE - do you know where abouts you are staying yet? Some of the out-of-centre areas can actually be better for cheaper, less touristy, Scottish food than the central area.
If you are after good scottish food then Stac Polly is a safe bet, although it is wise to book ahead. Deacon Brodies has already been mentioned and I would second that for a visit. If you fancy a Haggis Supper take away, then then Kingfisher at the top of the grassmarket (bread street) is the Best in my opinion. Not Scottish I know but the Guru on Dundee street is great for Currys and as it is tucked away out of the normal routes it is never very busy.
For a bit of a laugh, try Jekel & Hyde ( fredrick or Hannover street I think) for a few pints and then try to find the toilets! They also do food, but I can't say I have ever eaten there while sober.
Le Monde is a lovely place. We ate in the Paris Brasserie and found it very reasonable. The music was late 70's early 80's disco and was just right up our street! Best to book a table in advance, but that was on opening week and things may have settled down a bit since then. The hotel is next door but we didn't venture there, so can't comment, but the web pictures look nice.

One of the best Scottish restaurants is one called Blonde its on St Leonards Street in Newington easy acessed my most buses or cheap enough in a taxi well worth the visit. Especially if you have a sweet tooth as the deserts are great.
