Give it a go, but instead of just heaving yourself up through your arms and shoulders, focus also on pulling up through your belly button. Press-ups are a core exercise!

Is the inverted row an alternative to doing chin ups?
I have seen some guys doing it in the gym, using the bar on a Smith set low, and wondered what muscles that are working doing them.

Yeah, more or less. With an underarm grip it works the back and biceps.
