PMSL. Best thread title ever.

3% is utter arse. It's about 13% and the govt know it.

So how do the geniuses at Mansized measure inflation? At least ONS (that's the Office of National Statistics (not what ONS usually means on here) tells you how they do it. Quite interesting reading actually as it looks like essentials are going up, and some luxuries going down.

Clicky

By the simple observation that the cost of essential items go up on an almost daily basis.

Fuel
Vehicle expenses
Heating costs
Food
Mortgages
Council tax

The fact that luxury items come down in price is of no relevance; by definition, we can do without them.

And you know that quote about statistics ;-)

But as so many people seem to be posting about which widescreen TV to buy, how quickly they bought GTA, which new car to get - they hardly seem that bothered by prices.

"Simple observation" often means "selective observation" - people notice something and extrapolate from that.

The true British disease - whining about everything.

Indeed.

I selectively observe that every time I fill up my tank with fuel, it has gone up in price.

I selectively observe that essential food items cost more

I selectively observe that the cost of my gas / electricity and water increase above the alleged rate of inflation.

I selectively observe that my council tax increases way above the alleged rate of inflation

I do not have a wide screen TV, I buy most of my wardrobe in charity shops, and I have no idea what is a GTA

Oddly enough, although ONS suggests fruit has gone up, I seem to see fruit and vegetables dropping in price quite dramatically.

In my case, this seems to balance out the increase in the cost of bread.

3.5% is hardly way above, I would suggest.

But inflation figures are based on a notional average - people's own experience will differ. For example, I'm not affected by TV licence, price of meat and fish, and only affected marginally by the cost of petrol as I rarely use the car.

The true pseudo-intellectual disease - making sweeping statements that have no justification. Get off your high horse, pal and stop making comments about people you don't even know.
