There must be some, but none of them choose to come 'out'. I think this is quite sad, and sums up societys feelings towards those different from the norm.

Imagine if they 'came out', even their fans would say things to them. Is it best that it is kept quiet.

Exactly, no club would want them, which says it all really.

Very sad, imo.

It's easy to blame society, isn't it?

There is at least one all-gay Sunday football team (or at least I'm pretty sure they were non-league), they were profiled in The Guardian magazine one Saturday last year alongside one for the blind, the homeless, and so on.

The fact is, society now is much more nosy and shallow than it is homophobic, and values idiotic gossip over respect for the athlete's sporting achievement. Said gossip will be dressed up as "representation" for the purpose of "role models".

The one all-gay rugby team that I read about in The Guardian was slagged off by Peter Tatchell for "selling out" when they started to play against straight teams. Start by not letting loudmouths with agendas claim to represent an entire community, and that'll be the start of more openly gay sportspeople.

Only Martina Navratilova really stands out as having won respect for her achievements in Tennis and the longevity of her career, making her sexuality irrelevant. Similarly there's one top-flight Aussie rugby player who's out (can't remember his name now), and it hasn't harmed his career.

Do you watch Top Gear? They want to a southern State and provoked a lot of people.

Would you go to a Tory-voting farming village and talk about homosexuality, anti-fox hunting, anti-farming and promote the Labour Party.

It is society, though. There are too many people who go along with the diversity thing, but underneath they are fucking, 'fucking gay boy', or 'queer', or whatever.

Sure, if a player comes out, the papers will lap it up, saying how brave the person is, etc, but underneath, well..I don't care to imagine what they'd WANT to print.

Look at Frank Bruno, in the morning edition of the sun it's 'Bonkers Bruno locked up', the next day they donate to a mental health charity. Anyone different then the norm gets hammered.

I think you've hit the nail. Like with Jodie Foster, all those people demanding she qualify whether she was lesbian or not. Why the hell should she?! What business is it of anyone else's?

Yes but Frank had achieved plenty before his mental problems (inc those brought about by divorce, not just the boxing), and the outcry came from the public. So the hammering backfired on the paper.

Elton John bought into a football club and the worst that happened was one homophobic chant. Does he give a shit when he's worth a billion quid? Plus it would be the gay footballer's former lovers lapping up the cash from the stories they'd sell, just as much as "big bad society".
