Yes but Frank had achieved plenty before his mental problems (inc those brought about by divorce, not just the boxing), and the outcry came from the public. So the hammering backfired on the paper
Elton John bought into a football club and the worst that happened was one homophobic chant. Does he give a shit when he's worth a billion quid? Plus it would be the gay footballer's former lovers lapping up the cash from the stories they'd sell, just as much as "big bad society".
can we leave talk of gay footballers lapping things up please?
in my opinion it is society, represented by some sections of the media, that stops gay sportsmen coming out. I wouldn't be surprised if some fans boycotted a match or sommat.

Not just that, but campaign to get the player of out the club, force the club to stop selling any merchandise linked to that player at the club stores and beat-up any fan with his name on the back of a shirt.

Thats what I was thinking.
Lets be honest, there are some white people who only want other white people in society. There are some asian people that only want asian people in society. There are some christians that only want christains in society. There are also some straight people that only want straight people in society.
And on and on. Society will never ever be totally tolerant, so, imo, gay sports stars/movie stars will rarely come out.

Yes, and it's some sections of the gay community that will tell those gay sportsmen that they owe something to the "cause" or some other bullshit like that. If you're only talking about Football, the directors have plenty of other ways to run the clubs into the ground, than having a gay player.
Imagine if they 'came out', even their fans would say things to them. Is it best that it is kept quiet.
WTF?!
Don't get me wrong, I am not a left liberal campaigning type, I just think everyone should get on with things, but comments like this do not help, JT5.

It's easy to blame society, isn't it?
Very, but who makes up society? Yes, all of us, and if people carry on with the 'well, it's always been this way' attitude then nothing will ever change in the world of sport.
It needs one player to make the break-through, live through the pain, and play a good game, and the taboo would be broken.
There are many a rumour about swimmers too, but I can't remember names...

There is at least one all-gay Sunday football team (or at least I'm pretty sure they were non-league), they were profiled in The Guardian magazine one Saturday last year alongside one for the blind, the homeless, and so on.
....
The one all-gay rugby team that I read about in The Guardian was slagged off by Peter Tatchell for "selling out" when they started to play against straight teams. Start by not letting loudmouths with agendas claim to represent an entire community, and that'll be the start of more openly gay sportspeople.
Both the football team, and the rugby team (not that I have ever been in a hot tub with any of the rugby players! :-O) are pretty well known in London. There is also a gay rugby team in Manchester, The Spartans, who are pretty well known - maybe it says something about the attitude of the people who play and follow rugby, that there are two quite successful teams who play.
