I am so gutted!

Don't know what my final mark is but I know I got a 2:2 for my degree. Pretty shit tbh, I must have been so close to a 2:1 too. Considering pretty much all decent grads jobs are minimum 2:1 it seriously limits my options. At first I just didn't believe it, I honestly thought I'd done enough to get a 2:1. 4 years of uni for a pretty worthless degree!!

You feel that way now but all is not lost.

1. Most employers never ask the degree grade... I have never been asked for mine.

2. Just go straight onto a 1 year Masters... who cares about your Bachelors grade when you have MA or MSc after your name?

Ok, wait up. Just because you have a 2:2 for your dissertation doesn't mean you will get a 2:1. Can you do the calculation based on your other results?

Also I have interviewed some grads and you can tell the ones that you want working for you irrelevant of the actual degree award.

Don't panic yet Loki. It definatley isn't 4 years down the drain!

after a couple of years experience your degree will count for nothing anyway.

I've never had to show my degree, though I was asked to bring it in for my last job, my current job didn't even ask for references!

Loki

There is only one person who thinks you have a shite degree - and that's you. And if you treat it like a shite degree, that's what it is.

However, if any organisation only gives somebody a job based on their degree, you don't want to work for them. I don't know what your area is or what the "decent grad jobs" are, but in many areas, the degree question is yes/no rather than a ranking. If it's a points system, somebody with a third may get the same points as somebody with a first.

What you need to do is get the whole story right - sell your skills. If you had the ability to get a 2:1 (and grade should really be ability ability rather than just hard work - although there is some overlap) you should be able to use that as part of the selling process.

Following on from what others have said - I've interviewed graduates who think just being a graduate is enough. They don't get the jobs.

it's true though, would you rather hire somebody with 2 years commercial relevant experience, or hire a grad that you have to train up, and may leave after 6 months anyway.

You degree helps you get your foot in the door, and get a few steps up the ladder.

I'd justlike to point out that a 2:2 is nothing to scoff at. The majority of people in the UK don't even have a degree so please don't piss all over people that were happy to get a 2:2 or just even get a degree.

THere are plenty of jobs out therewith great career prospects that do not look for people fro oxbridge with 1st. Rather than sitting in the depths of despair because you might have only "done enough" to get a low 2:1, think about how you're going to motivate yourself to get the job you want and the steps you need to take to get it.

So many people (and I'm not having a goat anyone in particular) waist the opportunities given because they do not have the balls to go out and get what they want.
