As some one who was morbidly obese and now obese (but not for much longer hopefully) I think I will give my view.

I was/am the way I was/am because I ate too much.
I dont know the reasons for this genetic/otherwise, but I suspect it was more of a lifestyle choice. ie convenience food etc whilst living a very busy life. I think thats the top and bottom of it. I could easily claim the genetic card (as my mum and sister are overweight) but I dont see the point.

Simply put, eat less and you will lose weight. Your genes arent forcing you to eat, and I suspect arent making it any harder than it is for anyone else to lose weight. It may be harder as some people can eat anything and not get fat, and your physically in worse shape so exercise is more difficult/streneous.

All said, its peoples choice, but I can understand why people may view it in different ways (ie NHS costs, lazyiness etc). I could be lazy and still get a low body fat, by not training, so I suspect its more will power then being lazy.

There are undoubtedly genetic reasons for the way people react differently to food. Some people will be more inclined to store fat, lose muscle, or be less able to react to being full. Some people are more vulnerable to becoming addicted to food.

Tough. It isn't an excuse. It won't take long for you to realise that you are one of these people and need to alter your eating and exercise habits to compensate. If you don't know what healthy foods are, go and consult a nutritionist.

Give that man a 5 star.
Oseity gene my arse. Its just a cop out for the lazy fat gits.
Obesity is everywhere in the western world at the moment but it is a relatively brand new problem.
The people that exitsed over the past 10,000 years were not obese whether they had the gene or not, because they didn't overeat. Sure maybe food was a bit more scarce but the point is the gene is not a reason for obesity. Overeating is.

I reckon Leaner is right there. Gene or no gene I get hungry as feck on a cut but don't give in to temptation. The 'I have the Fat Gene' excuse is almost official now and every fat man, woman and child will be playing that card.

Get your face out of the nose bag people.

Obesity gene simply means you're more likely to eat more...there are other genes too....the criminal gene

I think obesity can be cause by an addictive personality.

just like gamblers, alcoholics, and junkies.

lol @ fat gene.

I have the fat gene, I'd rather eat 5 cheeseburgers everyday but I don't because I am too vain. I want to though.

I put it next to my 'wank too much gene' and my 'drink too much gene'

I remember reading an article looking at junk food like burgers and chips - it is not the same as an addictive drug like heroin or nicotine, but it is v close.
@Tom - so now what, shall we let off people who burgle, or rape, because they have bad genes?

It has to be genetic.

I dated a girl once who was 5'7'' and 7st. She ate more junk than I did and she never gained a single pound in the 5 months I dated her. Never exercised. She had a sixpack fer cryin' out loud.

F*cking bitch ;)

It's not about being skinny though, it's about being healthy.

I don't really have very much sympathy for people who are fat. You eat too much, or too much crap. It isn't rocket science.
