Presumably she came second because whatever criteria the judges were using... she came next to top. I don't see the need for all the insults nor the self righteous crap about diet.
The message this sort of thing gives to young girls is that beauty goes beyond body size - which has to be positive. 'Health' is a complicated construct and this isn't a competition about that as far as I know beyond that which is skin deep.
Young girls aren't going to see fat legs and rush out and eat a lot... they might be a bit happier, however, knowing that you don't have to be a stick to be applauded as a beauty.

So it is okay for people to criticise skinny super models and talk about health; however, one cannot do the same to obese Miss England's candidates
I think the winner is setting a more positive example. She isn't stick thin. She has the little bulges that are normal but she's also not overweight.
And even without weight in the equasion I still think Miss 2nd place isn't all that pretty.
I'd be interested to see a day in the life of her. How much does she eat, what's her general lifestyle like.
It's one thing to have a positive attitude towards the fact that you might be on the larger side of the weight range for your height but, she is clearly quite considerably overweight.
Bravo for the confidence and what not but if she was 2nd place and a size 14...that would be a much better example to be setting.
Double edged sword isn't it, on one hand she's obviously strong spirited to go for it and highlights you don't need to be stick thin but on the other hand overweight, big boned(??) or big girls are are not in prime health.
I keep having an argument (banter) with a woman at work who thinks just because size 14 or so is average in the uk she thinks I am a pig for only wanting to go out with ppl around the size 8-10 mark. She doesn't get that the averages are skewed because of a lot of people are overweight, drink too much and don't exercise!
So she is overweight. Not sure that justifies some of the comments.
I just popped on to see how this thread was progressing as I'd not seen it since my post this morning. I have to agree with Lardy though. Some of the comments are quite nasty. All over a girl none of you have met (as far as I know). You're throwing insults based on her size and that's totally unfair. A moment like this makes me wonder if this site is really all that more mature than the Men's Health one.
I'm not throwing insults, I'm stating facts. She's a chubster. She's not even fit.
Oh come on. You called her a 'munter' and asked if she'd heard of salads and gyms. Can you really not see how that might be construed as insulting? It's one thing saying she's overweight (fact) but another to call her a munter (insulting opinion). Do you honestly not see the difference there?
