well, it is the first time I've done this, gotta start somewhere. This kind of work is only once in a blue moon, so REF: 0000001 - doesn't look great, I'll know when they have paid and can keep on track of it though, will consider that when I get a few under my belt.

Cheers Jimmie.

You can start at any number, why not buy Sage, £90 and it will do it all for you!

Don't start at 00001

I use three letters of the client, plus the date

For example MAN0709

for MansizedJuly2008

Tax deductible too - but hardly worthwhile if you only send out a couple of invoices a week.

This won't be making enough money to justify spending £90, it is just something on the side of current job.

Got the email, cheers jimmie. I know what to do for next time and will chase this up early August.

Only if he has an actual company i would have thought, doesn't sound like he is doing lots of work atm.

If you are going to do more consultancy work you need to be more methodical in your approach, normally the first visit to assess the work to be carried out would be for free but then you should issue a statement of intent, quote, estimate call it what you will ect. this should outline the work to be carried out, the time to do it and the associated costs of doing the work either as a price per hour worked or a one off cost, you should also set down your terms of payment at this time and any other relative information

If you've done this work for a reputable Company the norm for payment could be between 30 & 90 days, i would certainly be chasing after 30 days

Go lower, 7 or 14!

The longer the money takes to come in, the less interest your getting etc! Only give 21 if you have to, 14 is a good compromise.
