Yes couch surfing is an option- a friend is doing it and really enjoys it! I suppose I feel like I might be taking the piss somewhat sleeping and bathing in someone elses home- mind you I'd be happy to let others stay too.
I just looked up travel by cargo ship greg- actually quite interesting if expensive!
i bought a book, "first time travelling around the world" or something, by rough guides, gives you lots of ideas on alternative means of transport.
I want to do the mongol rally at some point, drive a shit car from london to mongolia, any which way you want, petrol might be expensive though now :S
Sorry to go OT for a second. Greg is Easter Island cool?
I'm going to South America next year and I always wanted to go to Easter Island.
The only thing putting me off is the expense and duration of the flight from Santiago.
Is it worth it?
Apple, what is tying you down? If you have some cash, and fancy going then go!
Make sure you budget in some form of money buffer, as you will always spend more than you plan, and as has been said in Europe you are never far from home/anyone that speaks good English!
Have you got any ideas in mind of where you fancy going?
What's stopping me? Erm the worry it's a bad decision and coming back to no job and no stability is worrying. I'm also scared of being home sick and going alone!
Greg how much did a years travelling cost you do you think?

Hmmm, guess that is what gets everyone (me, included!) Maybe if I had been more organised with myself (and my mind!), I would maybe have done so travelling instead of arsing around these past few months...
But, ahhh well..... Thing is, you can always temp when you get back, and you are not tied to a mortgage, or anything. But, in these credit crunch times, everything is a bit uncertain, and jittery, even temp job wise :-/
Yes, and no - I think I am more focussed, and careful with money now, and will endeavor to save a stash each month. But, I also need to probs do this new job for at least a year to get my CV back in decent shape again....
I would never say never though, and I think you can do travelling at any time in life nowadays. It's moved away from the pre- and post-uni gap year thing, with more people doing it a bit later on in life.
Where do you reccomend of what you've seen of Europe?
I can get a 3 month unlimited coach pass which covers quite a few European countries for £540 which will get my from city to city. That leaves around a £20 a day- doable in certain cheaper countries.
