I guess i am just confused, i can browse the web pages on MS from another computer and never log in, you would never know it was me, hence i was wondering how u knew that people were coming back. The only exception I can think to this would be if there actually logging in, but this would also assume you log what pages each user visits.
You need to log in to enter a competition and we collect usernames against each comp. By looking at these lists of names we can see if people are returning or not.
We don't know a lot about people who haven't joined other the what our site stats tell us. Repeat visits are up and comps have definitely played a part.
Cheers for your questions liquid
No worries, sorry meant how do u know these people are going to other parts of the site, other than to enter comps, i.e. are they reading the news or reviews sections, or just giong str8 to comps section. I know that you require to login to enter the comps, but what i meant was outwith that you don't really know what else they do on the site, esp if the choose not to log in just to read the news etc. Which is why I was wondering how much these people access the site other than for the comps. Like I say, not a big deal.
Will, u say that these people are coming back to the site, albeit not posting, which is great! How do you know there coming back though?
There's obviously lots of ways of doing this but we've looked a couple of times at entrants' usernames. We're seeing the same names crop up with new ones joining the more comps we do.

Anyway its not a big point, again was just a query as technically i don't think its possible to log a person just hitting pages on a website. Yes I know IP's etc can be recorded, but there is lot more to it than this.
Anyways, don't worry about it.
I guess very few people use many different PCs. Personally I use 2. So I guess its not that much of an issue.
Sorry, the two comp thing was just an example the same thing applies to one comp, but the user not logging in.
Will - Have you considered posting your comps to these competition websites? I am assuming you do, or a user of one of those sites do as there is always a mass of activity when a new comp appears.
We used to but these days someone else gets there first :-)

Thinking a little bit more, dont know how easy or hard this would be. I was thinking about the whole NHS thing how they are keen for people to stop smoking, lose weight etc. If you could get in with your local PCT even just to get them to have flyers kicking around about the site.
I can talk to Dr Keith and Petra about it - there may be legal/ marketing issues but they'll know about them. Cheers for the suggestion

We'd like to do more tracking like this but there's not enough hours in the day! Some board regulars don't visit other site sections. Some compers don't visit the boards. All we really need to know is both are popular and that's good for everyone.

For the comp analysis we counted entries and usernames so it doesn't matter whether they enter one comp from home and another from work.
every month i look forward to the announcement of the competition winners, but i dont know why i bother, most of the comps are now won by non contributers, whatever happened to regulars winning, dont think i,ll bother entering any more. jammy bastards (yes it is sour grapes but i dont care)
lf you scroll up to the top you'll see we've covered your questions in full. Comp entrants do contribute to the site, just not to the board.
It'd be a shame if you stopped entering comps, but that's obviously up to you.
We generally don't get offered very many prizes over the summer - was the same last year - but happy to say we had two suggestions yesterday. We're uploading one in the next day or two.
A regular's just won one of the comps that closed Friday - well done! And we've another comp online now to win a snazzy gaming chair and DVDs. Click 'win' above to have a look. Cheers all
