but i always tell people they would have to be super special for me to try and jump in and save them if they were drowning.
you should never do that anyway ... I learnt that in a kayaking course ... "Reach, Throw, Wade or Row" ... never swim out to someone, they could take you down.

I used to be in a swimming club a few years ago and love swimming, such a great exercise!
I don't know if this is being patronising suggesting this, but the breathing is all about timing. For example, the front crawl you'd turn your head to the side as you bring your arm over (I always favoured my left side) then exhaled through the stroke under water before repeating (if that makes sense). Means you're breathing each stroke so have plenty of oxygen to fuel your lungs.

Which is harder to do if you panic when your face is under water having breathed it in before.
I am descended from an ape not a fish therefore it ain't natural to have my head under water.
I can't swim anymore :S I really ought to find the time to have swimming lessons and relearn. Good luck , arthurP! Any particular reason you have started?
2. just wanting to be more confident in the water, really. my two boys can swim like the fishes so it's kind of embarrassing flailing along behind them ...
Try a couple of swimming lessons - just a couple. Many of the instructors will do 1 to 1 lessons.
Try to master the breathing with the assistance of a float between your legs - by helping you to stay afloat, you can concentrate on the breathing without worrying about sinking.
One you master the technique (which you will very quickly), then it will become easier. Each time you go in, you can do a bit more.
Two lengths becomes three lengths
Fifty seconds becomes 45 seconds
and so on.
It will get easier !
Humans are the only mammals who need to be taught to swim - all other mammals swim instinctively
