Personally, I prefer pissing around with an assist machine at 5/5 :-p
well, no offense to you, but i'm guessing you're probably quite along way ofg doing unassisted chins.
You're working towards losing sgnificant weight whereas 80 is looking to gain weight. i just think chins are a staple of the bulking rouitne and if you can't do them you're either too fat, too weak or both!
I could do chins when i was 15 st 4. Not at 5/5 though.
i'd personally just do chins at a speed that allows you to get some decent reps out rather than pissing around with an assist machine and doing 5/5.
I meant both - which I've just realised may be my concern for the overtraining - I'm so used to doing slow reps. It's what I've always done.
Perhaps I continue to delude myself but like I said, I really don't think I'm fat - or weak to be honest - just could be better (who couldn't?).
How are you on the lat pulldown 80? I read last night that if you can pulldown your bodyweight + 5% then you should progress onto chins. I'm a lanky dude like you & weigh a couple of stone less than you do & struggle on the chins

Isn't the idea he gets stronger?
lol... yeah, i just kind of put that in for affect. i just meant he's too fat!!! ;O)
i meant too weak for his weight. And if hes get heavier from bulking he's going to put chinups even further out of reach. I'm just going from my own experience... when i've been bulking in the past and the chin performance has dropped i know i've got a bit too fat.
he could always neither cut or bulk... he could just stay on maintenance cals and train like a mofo. Despite what many people say he could still improve his strength and physique.

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone - I can't hink off the top of my head how much I can carry on the pulldown, but I think that could be the right way to go. keep at the pulldown until I've picked up enough weight

Dutch, this is perhaps the way I am going to go - any increase in cals I hope will be almost unnoticeable - but hopefully enough to give a little help to strength.
