The Rolling Stones – Rolled Gold +

Yet another anthology from the elder statesmen of rock ‘n’ roll. But we like it

As Christmas looms on the horizon and the jolly bearded one prepares to empty his, er, sack, those crafty rock capitalists the Rolling Stones are out to make a quick buck with the slickly packaged retrospective Rolled Gold +.

Originally released on vinyl in 1975, the two CD set aims to lure diehard fans and affluent consumers with the promise of an additional 12 songs, a track by track breakdown, extensive liner notes by music journalist and self proclaimed Stones expert Pierre Perrone, and an environmentally friendly popup case. How thoughtful.

The album will also be available on a USB memory stick, which is a UK industry first.

They say:

MusicOMH: “Reminds you just how good the Stones were before they became a stadium hopping parody of themselves.”

We say:

With their career spanning 2002 compilation Forty Licks and countless other re-releases readily available on the cheap, you could argue the Stones are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with Rolled Gold +. But truth to be told, it is the definitive overview of the band’s ‘60s and early ‘70s output, when they were at the peak of their hedonistic powers and earned the right to be dubbed the Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band in the World™.

Aside from featuring such trademark rockers as ‘Get Off of My Cloud’, ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, this generously proportioned 40 track compilation also documents the growth and jaw dropping success rate of the Jagger and Richards songwriting partnership as they dipped their toes in R&B and straight blues covers (‘Little Red Rooster’, ‘Carol’), Motown grooves (‘Under My Thumb’), psychedelia (‘She’s a Rainbow’), Chicago blues (‘Midnight Rambler’) and country (‘Wild Horses’).

It’s also clear proof that while their ‘60s contemporaries the Beatles made pop music straight out of heaven, the Stones coined all the Devil’s best tunes, all sexed up rhythms, misogynistic putdowns and predator on the prowl swagger. Only a man of strong will could resist the urge to hand over his hard earned in exchange for a piece of everlasting rock ‘n’ roll pleasure.
