The good news is that Cerise beats the crap out of all those identikit chain set-ups around Reading hands down.
The bad news is that the bar’s in a boutique hotel and - like the increasing number of these fancy little hotels that seem to be springing up in every nook and cranny these days - it carries an air of snooty exclusivity.
Ignore that though and you are left with a decent though limited range of tipples.
They say:
The Guardian: “In Cerise, the chic and sexy basement restaurant and cocktail bar, I find out where Reading's ladies who lunch, go to have their dinner.”
The Evening Standard: “The food is great, the cocktails potent, the staff attractive.”
We say:
A sharp rhubarb bellini (rhubarb puree, apple juice and champagne), has the fruit complimenting the champagne while the signature cocktail The Forbury (cherry brandy, Grey Goose Vodka and lime juice), culminates in a sweet yet zesty partnership.
All the usual classics are here too and the bar offers a bonus in the form of a “foozology” menu, recommending a range of tapas-style dishes matched with appropriate cocktails, wines and beers.
High gloss sheen of all wood and stone is dandy though hardly cutting edge.
