Read the media blurb on this establishment and you’ll come across all kinds of pretentious babble such as “democratic eating house” or “mid-century optimism and classlessness”.
Silly stuff indeed and doesn’t in any way relate to the pretty decent modern British grub on offer here with modest prices to boot.
They say:
The Observer: “At Canteen the food speaks for itself.”
The Times: “Canteen represents a past and a future to which I will be going back again and again and again.”
We say:
Canteen’s an all day dining affair so breakfast kicks in at 11am weekdays or 9am weekends with the likes of well made bacon and eggs with bubble and squeak (£6.50).
Follow on with light dishes and starters including devilled kidneys on toast (£5.50) to fish pie (£9.50).
There are additional “fast service” dishes such as fish and chips to macaroni cheese, but bear in mind that the a la carte mains are cooked to order so you might just have to kill time and bite your nails for a while!
Environs of pale wood and wall to ceiling windows are comforting, but give not a chance in hell of any intimacy.
Service is hit and miss.
