Depending on where you live, the west London suburb of Southall – affectionately known as “Little Indian” due to its large Asian populace – may well be a bit of distance, but it’s also an area that’s heaven on plate for curry addicts.
So if you ever fancy a curry trek, this is a great place to start.
They say:
Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2006: “It’s immensely popular with large groups and families out celebrating birthdays, and consequently sparkles with a certain buzz.”
The Good Food Guide: “It puts its faith in the traditions of family cooking, with fresh spicing and sheer consistency as its hallmarks.”
We say:
Chuck a stick and you’ll hit ten Indian restaurants here. Do your homework though to check what’s recommended in the area.
Brilliant ranks damn near the best. For 30 years, this joint has been going rock solid with robust Indian fare but then recently decided to have an overhaul of the menu with the additions of “healthy options” and the usage of olive oil throughout.
Mind you, the grub isn’t exactly cheap. Outstanding tandoori lamb chops, marinated in paw paw fruit, nutmeg and cardamom, amongst other spices, come at a whopping £9 as a starter. But the portion’s worth it. There’s also superbly flavoured butter chicken and jeera (cumin) chicken, both at £8 each.
Mains feature a who’s who of Indian favourites, but I’m not talking bastardised versions of Indian fare. Thus stuff here is pretty authentic – karahi gosht (£9), methi chicken (£8) and stonkingly good black lentils (£4.50). Rice and breads are spot-on too.
Yes, the décor needs a makeover but go there to enjoy the grub with friends, not to ogle at yesteryear’s furnishings.
