Maggie (Diaz) isn't exactly the sort of girl you want to bring home to your mum. A liar, thief, slut and borderline alcoholic, Maggie has pissed off so many people that she only has one friend left in the world – her long suffering sister Rose (Collette).
So how does she reward her sibling's unwavering loyalty and support? By trashing her apartment, breaking her favourite pair of shoes and shagging her boyfriend. Cue break-up, make-up, and orders of "wake up!" from your missus, as you try desperately not to fall asleep during the next two hours of coma inducing misery.
They say:
Total Film: "A bittersweet study of family ties, boasting wit, class and emotion. Not at all what you’d expect from a movie about girls and shoes."
Guardian: "The movie hobbles like a three legged donkey, lumbering endlessly between sunshine and rain before finally disappearing over the rainbow in a flood of feelgood tears. Ugh!"
Empire: "While on the surface very much a girls’ film, this ruefully honest picture has something to say to everyone. A simple yet rich drama played with humour and compassion and blessed with excellent performances."
We say:
Why director Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential / 8 Mile) felt the need to make a chick flick is a mystery to us - much like women's fascination with shoes in fact.
Collette and Diaz are miscast as sisters, Rose's career switch from high flying lawyer to professional dog walker is barking and the 130 minute running time is a terrible indulgence.
On a more positive note though Hanson does include a lot of gratuitous shots of Diaz in her underwear and limits the amount of "pass the bucket" moments to a bare minimum.
Watch "In Her Shoes" with the missus but only if it means you get In Her Pants afterwards.
