DJ Andy Smith/ Stone Sour/ Blackbud/ DMX

Our roundup of albums released on Thu 27th July

Yet another mixtape compilation, DJ Andy Smith Presents Trojan Document (Trojan ****) sees the eclectic Portishead man charting the evolution of reggae via Trojan’s back catalogue. Both history lesson and summer barbecue.

Come What(ever) May (Roadrunner ***) is the second album from American alt metal band Stone Sour. Fronted by Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor (Halloween mask not included), it has all the guts and gore required of the genre, though Nickelback blandness sets in with ballad Through the Glass.

Meanwhile, Glastonbury comp winners Blackbud release From the Sky (Independiente **). While a revelation live, their debut album sounds uncomfortably like Jeff Buckley meets Led Zeppelin in a Wiltshire coffee shop, with their vigorous musicality watered down for potential Radio 1 airplay.

Finally, FBI impersonating rap rogue DMX has found time to record Year of the Dog... again (Sony **) in between his numerous brushes with the law. But aside from the harsh beatwork of ‘Lord Give Me a Sign’, he needn’t have bothered. His descent into mediocrity is complete.
