Summer may soon draw to a close, but a last minute and inexpensive barbecue is being offered in the stately grounds of a boutique hotel in East Sussex. Is the trek worth it?
They say:
Time Out: “Culinary fireworks exploding in the kitchen of this exciting restaurant."
The Good Food Guide: “Fish seemed a strong point.”
We say:
Lewes is an attractive little town which has always been associated as the gateway to the Sussex Downs. Just the kind of place ripe for a boutique hotel.
The good news though is that Circa, a brasserie style establishment set within the period environs of Pelham House hotel building, is running a “global” British barbecue menu every Sunday till September in its gardens, weather permitting.
What is quite surprising is that despite the rarefied location, price levels for this barbecue venture are really quite acceptable.
Take for instance the blue fin tuna loin with garlic mayonnaise and lime wedge, which, with three salads included, only comes to £10. This is pretty good going.
A well made organic beef burger (£9) is given an appropriately zesty kick with the accompanying tomato jam while vegetarians can work their way through a highly flavoursome pattie (£8.50) of chick pea, lemon and goat’s cheese.
Sides have been allotted no less space with such interesting items as five spice corn cob to sweet potato wedges with piri-piri spices.
There’s more than a rustic tinge to the fare and that includes desserts such as goat’s milk panna cotta with saffron and orange poppy jelly.
All this and views of rolling hills – get yourself down there.
