Guillemots/ Embrace/ Jamelia/ Lostprophets

Our roundup of singles released on Thu 7th Sept

Hot on the heels of their show stopping performance at the Mercury Music Prize ceremony, multi national pop avant gardists the Guillemots release ‘Trains to Brazil’ (Fantastic Plastic ****), a surreal jazz jungle tune about appreciating life inspired by the tragic death of the Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes. Note the egg timer showmanship.

More widescreen anthemics from the Yorkshire lads Embrace on ‘Target’ (Independiente ***), the second single from their album ‘This New Day’. A nice return to form, though the line “you will hit the target every time” is somewhat ironic given their official footie anthem failed to hit the top spot.

Following a two year hiatus as a stay at home mother, Jamelia returns to the pop fold with ‘Something About You’ (Parlophone **). Some will undoubtedly call the addition of a guitar driven chorus to her slick urban pop sound a bold, edgy move. I’d argue that it’s entirely derivative of American pap pop queen Kelly Clarkson and ultimately soulless. Still, what do I know?

And Kerrang! darlings Lostprophets release ‘A Town Called Hypocrisy’ (Visible Noise **), another slice of sugar coated pop metal that is high on superficial angst and low on integrity. One for the “sk8er bois” only.
