The Big Lebowski - Special Edition

The Coen brothers seven year old classic gets re-released for no particular reason. The crowd goes wild...

Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski, a.k.a. “The Dude”, a middle aged slacker with a penchant for dope, White Russians (the drink, not Caucasian Europeans) and ten pin bowling.

But there’s another Jeff Lebowski in town - a millionaire philanthropist with a loose knickered trophy wife - and a case of mistaken identity soon lands The Dude in the middle of a kidnapping plot involving German nihilists, amateur pornstars and man eating marmots.

To make matters worse, someone has stolen his favourite rug, which “really tied the room together man.”

They say:

Total Film: “Magnificent. A multiplex friendly critics’ movie in the stripped down Blood Simple/ Fargo style, but with a more restrained hint of Raising Arizona slapstick.”

Guardian: “When I came out of the Coen Brothers' new film, it was with a smile on my face and the thought that I couldn't remember ever laughing so much at such an unsatisfactory film.”

Empire: “A film as peculiar, original and unstintingly inventive as any on their twisted CV. In a perfect world all movies would be made by the Coen brothers.”

We say:

The Coen Brothers’ finest film gets a special edition re-release for no apparent reason eight years after its original outing.

We assumed there must be a load of spanking new extras added on for the fans, but an unsatisfactory half hour “making of” featurette and some dull on set photographs from Bridges proved otherwise.

Nevertheless, TBL is still an absolute must have for any DVD collection thanks to one of the funniest scripts of the last decade.

Lines like “This isn’t ‘Nam, this is bowling, there are rules!” and “Are you ready to be fucked man?” are cinema classics delivered by one of the finest all star casts in memory. It doesn’t get any better than this.
