Not content with having the fastest selling jazz debut earlier this year with Betcha Bottom Dollar, those feisty ‘40s revivalists the Puppini Sisters have set their sights on the coveted Christmas number one spot in the UK singles chart.
And in keeping with their tradition of putting an Andrews Sisters tinged doobie doo wop spin on established material, the girls have arranged and recorded new versions of two festive classics to be released as a double A side on 18th December.
Bookmakers William Hill are currently quoting the group 5th favourite at 16/1 to claim the top position.

We say:
In my review of the Puppini Sisters’ debut album I likened much of it to watching a Goodnight Sweetheart marathon – overly repetitive, sleep inducing and ultimately nauseating – and I still stand by that.
However, maybe somewhere deep in my subconsciousness I’m actually developing a fondness for crap sitcoms or maybe the festive season has taken hold of my senses, because I’ll be damned if this double offering doesn’t charm the pants off me (metaphorically speaking, of course).
The trio’s reworking of ‘Jingle Bells’ is completely balmy, but infectiously so, with their three part harmonies weaving in and out of Looney Tunes drums and big band swing pop.
The ‘Little Match Seller’, meanwhile, is, as you’ve probably gathered, based on the traditional ‘Silent Night’ carol only spruced up with additional lyrics inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story.
More to the point, it’s actually quite beautiful, with the girls’ vocals, coupled with the touching string arrangement, steeped in melancholy which hangs over the Christmas season like unexploited mistletoe.
God, I must be going soft…
