Amy Winehouse – You Know I’m No Good

The London diva has been a bad, bad girl and she doesn’t care who knows it

Eyelashes and fingernails aside, there is nothing fake about Amy Winehouse. On the contrary, here is a woman who is as brutally honest as she is endearingly soulful – regardless of the consequences.

Having left the alt scene speechless with her complex, take no prisoners blend of urban jazz, pop and R&B on 2003 debut Frank, she set her sights on conquering the mainstream eith last year’s Back to Black. It brought 50s and ‘60s girl group soul to her street smart repertoire and made for one of the best albums of 2006.

Back to Black also earned Winehouse her first top ten hit to date in the shape of ‘Rehab’, which she now hopes to emulate with the album’s second single ‘You Know I’m No Good’.

They say:

musicOMH: “Easily one of the most talented British singers performing today, Amy’s soulful and meandering voice has a timeless quality to it.”

Digital Spy: “One of the best tracks of the year, and that’s no joke.”

We say:

The song is quintessential Winehouse, pitched nearer the sexual playground of Etta James than standard wholesome soul with splashes of alternative jazz and R&B funk sleaze.

“I cheated myself/Like I knew I would/I told you I was trouble/You know I’m no good,” Winehouse sings, her languid vocal delivery suggesting – nay, confirming – an apology for doing the nasty behind her boyfriend’s back is about as likely as her kicking the booze.

Whether you’re fond of her alcohol fuelled personality or not, you cannot deny the power of her candid songwriting and voice. In an industry darkened by pre-packaged pop stars and glorified karaoke bands, Winehouse is – as evidenced here – one of the few bright lights and long may she shine.
