For those out of the pop loop, Cheryl, Nadine, Kimberley, Sarah and, err, the other one from Girls Aloud have collaborated with the shape shifting Sugababes on a version of Aerosmith’s ‘Walk This Way’ for this year’s Red Nose Day.
Produced by TLC sonic architect Dallas Austin, the charity single is tipped to be one the biggest hits of 2007.
“When Comic Relief came up with the idea of us and Sugababes doing a song together we were really excited. It makes it special as we’ve never done a collaboration with another group and Sugababes were a great band to duet with,” says Cheryl.
“We’re really pleased to be working with Girls Aloud on this project,” adds Sugababe Keisha. “The Aerosmith/Run DMC version of the track is an all time classic collaboration. We just played around with it in the studio and had a bit of fun with it.”
They say:
Digital Spy: “The two groups have created a funky, fast paced version of ‘Walk This Way’ that can stand up against the original and hold its head high.”
musicOMH: “A pretty poor effort.”
We say:
Neither girl group has a particularly good track record when it comes to cover versions.
The pop scene is still recovering from Girls Aloud’s limp 2005 interpretation of Dee C Lee’s ‘See the Day’, while Sugababes’ reading of Hard Fi’s ‘Living for the Weekend’ came across as a desperate cry for indie acceptance.
So it continues with ‘Walk This Way’. The single tries to replicate the success of the 1986 Run DMC version – which is often credited as the first song to make hip hop mainstream thanks to its heavy rotation on MTV – but makes an absolute hash of it, with the girls’ vocal trade offs awkward at best and Joe Perry’s iconic guitar riff buried beneath bland dance pop production.
The result makes Britney Spears’ rendition of the Arrows’ ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ sound “edgy”. And who exactly thought a song about a promiscuous cheerleader popping a schoolboy’s cherry for the first time would be fitting for Comic Relief? Red Nose Day? More like Red Face Day.
Do yourself and the world a favour. Gives this monstrosity a miss and donate five quid instead.
