Enter Shikari – Take to the Skies

These Hertfordshire based genre splicers know how to throw a good party. Now all they need are some decent songs

New rave metallers Enter Shikari boast some impressive statistics.

Formed in 2003, they have notched up over one million plays on MySpace, become only the second unsigned band ever to shift all 2,000 tickets at the London Astoria and been featured on countless indie magazine covers across Europe.

And it’s all down to their incredible live sets in which neo metalheads and techno slaves come together to create one riotous shindig.

Having turned down offers from various major labels, the band release their debut album Take to the Skies through their own Ambush Reality imprint.

Completing their DIY approach, they also produced and recorded the album by themselves in two short weeks during the autumn of 2006.

They say:

Another Mansized exclusive. No one else has reviewed this yet.

We say:

Regardless of what the Enter Shikari PR machine says, mixing elements of dance and metal is not something new. In fact Nottingham’s Pitchshifter have been bringing these unlikely bedfellows together for over a decade now.

Still, credit where credit is due, Enter Shikari may be the first to drag it kicking and screaming into the mainstream, but for how long remains to be seen.

Because listening to Take to the Skies in the comfort of your own home, far away from the chemically stimulated mosh pits and glow sticks that zig zag through the night like radioactive fireflies, it becomes abundantly clear that the band have very few memorable songs.

The album sounds unfinished, the omnipresent guitar thrashes, guttural roars and ‘90s rave synths creating a suitably hyperactive vibe (think post hardcore band Funeral for a Friend holidaying in Ibiza) but with little in the way of a melodic pay off as they ultimately descend into nothingness.

For those craving a musical high, you’re better off sticking with Enter Shikari’s live shows.
