Biffy Clyro – Folding Stars

The scruffy rockers explore their softer side with this moving tribute

What a year it has been for Biffy Clyro. Having been one of Brit rock’s best kept secrets for much of the past decade, the Scottish three piece – Simon Neil (vocals, guitar) and brothers Ben (drums, vocals) and James Johnston (bass, vocals) – hit the big time with their fourth studio album Puzzle, which debuted at number two in the UK album chart and spawned two Top 20 singles, ‘Saturday Superhouse’ and ‘Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies’.

Renowned for their blistering live sets, they began 2007 by headlining the Kerrang! Tour in January, followed by their own 11 date tour across the UK, an appearance at Glastonbury, and support slots with Muse, the Rolling Stones and the Who.

And they show no signs of slowing down with the release of ‘Folding Stars’, which is the third physical single to be taken from Puzzle and features the B sides ‘Asexual Meat Kitchen’, ‘A Headline’ and ‘Coward’.

They say:

Clickmusic: “Authentic rock at its finest.”

We say:

Although many cite Seattle grunge monsters Nirvana as Biffy Clyro’s primary influence, it is the sound of Dave Grohl’s current band the Foo Fighters that ‘Folding Stars’ is most indebted to – particularly the American rock pranksters’ more reflective moments such as ‘February Stars’ and ‘Resolve’.

Inspired by the death of Simon Neil’s mother, it’s a proper heart on sleeve kind of ballad that obviously means the world to the Biffy frontman as he seeks catharsis through pain and compassion, accompanied by anthemic guitars and US radio bound chorus.

And while its emotional rawness is weakened somewhat by the glossy production, it remains a sweet and heartfelt tribute to Neil’s late mother and one that will further endear Biffy to their growing fanbase.
