Having scored a top ten hit earlier this year with the electro house carnival ride ‘Get Down’, London based dance duo Groove Armada (Andy Cato and Tom Findlay) are back for more with the release of ‘Song 4 Mutya’ as the second single from their Soundboy Rock album.
And things are looking good so far. Featuring former Sugababe Mutya Buena on lead vocals (see what they’ve done there?), ‘Song 4 Mutya’ is already number one in the Upfront Club Chart and the Music Week Pop Chart.
The video promo, meanwhile, is currently gracing the top spot in the UK TV airplay chart, despite being heavily criticised by the band for its amateurish feel.
The track also features on Buena’s debut solo album Real Girl, which was released last month to little fanfare.
They say:
LeedsMusicScene: “The three and a half minutes seem like a lifetime.”
NME: “The best thing committed to wax by any current or former Sugababe since Overload.”
We say:
Who’d have thought that a collaboration between one time chill out dullards Groove Armada and one time girl band mute Mutya Buena would yield such foot tapping results? Certainly not I.
In fact ‘Song 4 Mutya’ is not only the highlight of both Soundboy Rock and Real Girl, but one of the most infectious songs of summer 2007, taking the glossy synth pop of such ‘80s icons as Human League and Gary Numan (post lonely android, pre disgruntled goth) and giving it a modern party jam makeover.
And what’s this, Mutya grumbling about some new girl taking her place? Hm, a case of the singer momentarily falling for her ex boyfriend’s pitiful ploy to get her jealous, or a stiletto heeled dig at her ex bandmates for replacing her with Amelle Berrabah? You decide.
