Portuguese Canadian pop tease Nelly Furtado continues to milk her multi million selling album Loose for all its worth with the release of new single ‘In God’s Hands’.
It’s the fifth track to be taken from the album, which is home to some of the biggest global hits of the past year including ‘Maneater’, ‘Promiscuous’ and ‘Say it Right’.
It also comes hot on the heels of her chart topping collaboration with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland on ‘Give it to Me’ and successful world tour, in which she performed to (mostly) packed arenas all across Europe, Canada and the US.
They say:
CD Times: “A mediocre and plodding ballad.”
Digital Spy: “The tone of the song is attractive and it’s not itchily annoying as ballad releases frequently lean towards being.”
We say:
Co written by Furtado and the Grammy award winning Rick Nowels (Dido, Madonna), ‘In God’s Hands’ is a mellow acoustic driven ballad that contains elements of the ickle pop star’s work on sophomore album Folklore.
However, while it marks a nice change of pace from the usual Timbaland produced space hop grooves and is pleasant enough on the ears, it never really leaves you with the urge to hit the repeat button.
And that’s a shame because the song clearly means a great deal to Furtado – like the far superior ‘All Good Things’ before it, it tells the tale of a love gone sour and was inspired by her break up with Jasper Gahunia (aka DJ Lil’ Jaz) who is also the father of her three year old daughter.
Ah well, you can’t win them all. And as far as mild diversions go, you could pick a lot worse.
