Following the likes of Resident Evil and Streetfighter (remember Kylie and Van Damme, an on screen pairing to rival Fred and Ginger), Hitman is a thoroughly terrific way to throw ten quid down the drain.
Variety could not agree more: "A Eurotrashy vidgame knockoff that misses its target by a mile".
Timothy Olyphant - who excelled as an unhinged drug peddler eight years ago in Go - plays Agent 47, a bald contract killer with a barcode on his head. Here he's entrapped in a volatile conspiracy involving dissident politics and the Russian military. Yawn.
"Dazzling gunplay and lots of fireworks", says Maxim. "Stay at home and play the games instead", says us.
Ho, ho, ho! It’s Fred Claus starring Vince Vaughn. Is there anything better than the annual Christmas movie? Death by flatulence springs to mind.
"It creates a seasonal glow, but inconsistencies keep Fred Claus off the ‘Nice’ list this Christmas", offers Empire (** stars).
Maybe we should stop being so darn cynical? You decide: After Saint Nick (Paul Giamatti) bails his naughty brother Fred out of prison - he offers him a job in the North Pole helping out with the seasonal deliveries. Slapstick hi-jinks ensue and Kevin Spacey pops up (presumably lost) as a nit picking efficiency expert desperate to put a spanner in Santa’s works.
This might just raise a smile if the Christmas shopping is getting you down. We said might.
A promising curio starring newish leading man Ryan Reynolds and directed by Corpse Bride scribe John August, The Nines strives to offer something a little different from the norm.
"There's more than enough intelligence, intrigue and performance dazzle to make this an adventuresome gizmo for grownups", considers Variety. "In his first such effort August directs with as much alert confidence as he writes."
The tricky plot centres around TV actor Gary (Reynolds – who actually plays three different roles) and the crazy goings on he encounters while under house arrest and recovering from a drug induced car accident.
With its story split into distinct acts and a twist around every corner, The Nines is an unashamed brain, as well as entertainment, exercise. Absorbing.
