Walk Hard/ The Good Night/ AVP: Requiem

Our roundup of films released on Friday 18th Jan

John C Reilly is an amusing guy. You might remember him as Han Solo 'lookalike' Reed Rothchild from Boogie Nights, or as the best thing in Will Ferrell's miss hit Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

In Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story he plays the gamut as as fictional rock star Cox, a bizarre individual who becomes caught up in the trappings of fame, sleeps with a reputed 411 women and occasionally hangs out with The Beatles.

"Reilly, Kasdan and Apatow contributed to the Oscar worthy title song and the immortally awful "Mama You Got to Love Your Negro Man", claims Rolling Stone's reviewer. "Damn those Dewey ditties for sticking in my head. I'm walking hard to my Box of Cox."

Dewey Cox is a Walk the Line parody, of course - and by most accounts a jolly funny one too.

Martin Freeman has featured in one of the best sitcoms ever (The Office) and one of the worst (Hardware) - he is a limp, worryingly unknown quantity in our opinion.

The Good Night centres on Freeman's Gary and his omnipresent search for perfection. Not tough amongst the likes of Penelope Cruz and Gwyneth Paltrow, but more tricky when you throw Danny DeVito and Simon Pegg into the mix.

'"Could hit sleeper status", waxes Variety. "Few will be able to resist Martin Freeman's appealing lead."

There you go, then - it looks as though we are wrong and Martin Freeman is great after all. If you like dramedy romances set in New York and London then this might be your ambrosia.

Plus it's directed by Gwyneth's younger brother Jake and that makes for an interesting conversation starter.

AVP: Requiem is not a bad idea as such (they promised to ramp up the gore content this time), but ultimately a complete waste of time (they haven't).

The plot continues directly after the first spin off flick, Alien vs Predator, and then swiftly moves the warring A&P factions into a small town to unleash hell on each other and the area’s unfortunate residents.

"AVP is an early but strong contender for worst movie of 2008", slams Empire mercilessly.

The American tagline for this film was 'This Christmas there will be no peace on Earth'.

Great, so a scathing review and the threat of a headache - we'll pass, thank you very much.
