I would think it's even more basic than that. If they like the taste of the food they will eat it, if they don't they won't. They're prob just acting on basic pain/pleasure. Expecting a 3 year old to make some sort of logical rational reasoning about eating too much makes you fat or ill is a bit strange in my mind.
