Ever tried viagra (or viagra-like stuff) for pleasure?

What I mean is have you taken it without the medical need to have it?

This has been prompted by tonight's chat - why would you want to try it if you don;t need it? What makes it different to normal? And, have you had a bad experience from it?

Yes, I have taken it for pleasure, don't need to take it, don't know why I feel I have to say that, it's probably hard-wired into every bloke.

It is quality. I'm sure most of use have had that moment when 'in action' you've got hard, but not 'fully' hard! It makes your dick feel bigger than it ever has, reminded me of stiffy's I got when I was 14!

There are side effects but hey! Fuck it!

I understood - from the radio, not experience - that if there wasn't a problem, Viagara didn't really have much effect.

We've had this come up a few times and advice from Dr Petra and Dr Keith is always very clear - never take Viagra or similar products recreationally as they can cause harm.

These drugs are for men with a clinical condition and should only be used after a check up with your GP. People often assume they're harmless if there's nothing wrong with you, but that's a bit like someone who knows they're not depressed trying Prozac.

I'll ask one of them to drop in tomorrow. If you've got any questions about Viagra, similar drugs or herbal products then post here and we'll get you some clear answers. Cheers, W

Don't blame you Will for getting the disclaimer in. But I presume, as you did not mention it, that this conversation should stop.

The side effects are like having a bit of a head rush, as if you've got up to quick. But I kind of like it.

I will probably die in my sleep tonight.

Thanks for raising this issue which I think is an important one that we do need to cover.

I'll cover some of the main things you need to know about erectile dysfunction drugs (like Viagra) and their herbal substitutes. If you've further questions add them in this thread.

There are several side effects you can experience from Viagra.

Common ones include headaches, a flushed face, stomach discomfort after a meal (which can range from stomach ache through to a severe tummy upset), a stuffy nose.

Less common side effects include blurred vision, seeing colours differently (e.g. there's a blue or yellow tinge to your vision), light sensitivity. You can also experience bladder pain, cloudy or bloody pee, increased need to pee and pain when you do. You could also experience diarrhoea and dizziness.

Rare side effects include fits, severe visual problems like double vision or sight reduction, feeling like your eyes are burning, or bleeding from your eyes. Increased feelings of anxiety can occur as can a prolonged erection that won't go down (called priapism).

Viagra (and drugs like it) are designed for men who have chronic erectile dysfunction. That means you consistently can't get it up during sex with a partner or masturbation on your own over a period of months or longer. This is often linked with other health problems such as MS, diabetes, heart disease, spinal injury, or depression, but can be due to psychological factors (e.g. past sexual abuse or a current relationship problem).

If you need the drug your GP would give you a full health check first to ensure you need it and it won't make you ill and you know how to take it correctly.

If you decide to self medicate (e.g. buy online or from mates or another source) you don't know whether you're getting the real deal or a fake. You also don't know what dosage you're getting (the drug comes in different strengths). You also may not know whether you have any unknown underlying health problems that may mean the drug is not suitable for you - which could lead to the more serious side effects outlined above.

Unfortunately the manufacturers of sex drugs promote them as a 'lifestyle drug' and do little to prevent their wider availability online or similar. This means men often assume the drugs are not dangerous and are sex boosters which is not true.

Viagra and similar drugs will not make your penis bigger, it won't make you better in bed, it won't increase arousal. If you have underlying psychological or relationship problems it may not have any effect at all. It may increase blood flow to the penis so you feel you have a harder erection which some men and their partners enjoy, others find uncomfortable. Many leading doctors in this area believe the drug's main effects are often psychological in men so you believe they'll make sex better so it is.

The herbal versions of sex drugs are largely untrialled and tested so we do not know how safe they are, and how they compare with existing medications and placebo products. Although such herbal products are available in high street pharmacies and online they have not been proven to work and do not come recommended by health care staff. In fact in the US their pharmaceutical watchdog have warned against herbal products.

Herbal products may contain ingredients that are harmful or could interact dangerously with existing medications. Although these are mostly believed to work psychologically rather than physically. You believe they'll work so they do.

If you spot any herbal drugs advertised or websites advertising sex drugs let us know and we'll check it out for you.

Obviously we can't stop people taking drugs but we can point out what drugs for erectile dysfunction are for, bust some myths about what these drugs actually do and give you some information to help you decide.
