I went in and bought a brand new Raleigh mountain bike this morning.
the missus and I then went for a nice cycle through a large local park.
Anyway, going up a hill on the way home the chain came off and got stuck underneath the bottom front cog. As I pushed down with my right leg the pedal went from under me as the chain was not attatched. My foot carried through and hit the ground and I and the bike f*cked right over.
I now have a lovely severly grazed elbow and knee. A very painful left hip and an extremly painful ache just under my right ribs.
And my now my bike has completely warped handle bars.
Suffice to say I am going in to the shop tomorrow and reading the riot act.
the missus thinks I should go to A+E and get an x-ray on the ribs. I don't think it's a broken rib though as I have no trouble breathing.
My friend had a raleigh bike, it was utter crap, they may have been good several years (decades?) ago, but not so much now.
See if you can get a refund. you could try claiming that it wasn't "fit for purpose".
Before you slag off raleigh too much, the shop should have given the bike a pre delivery inspection service. Part of this is the make sure the gears are adjusted correctly which includes setting the min and max throw of the changers. If the chain came off as SB describes then it seems they didn't do it correctly. The changers on raleigh bikes are not made by raleigh them selves anymore (don't forget that we don't actually build much in the UK anymore!)
Feel sorry for you SB, not nice when you fall off. I had a blow out at 30mph last week... not good at all!
I got an x-ray and I'm fine. Just a lot of muscular soreness around the intercostals.
It put my mind at ease to hear The Saints point of view.
The shop that sold the bike to me is a good respectable shop, and I think they just let one bike slip through the net as it were. I am going back tomorrow to ask for a full refund. some friends of mine reckon I should sue them for damages but I was never that way inclined. Compo culture sucks.
However if they give me any grief about a refund I will fight my corner.
I've been cycling mountain bikes for 15 years and know that it was the bike that had a fault. If it had happened to me on a main road with traffic I would have been road kill.
