I think the best bet would be to cut to a reasonable level, with the abs slightly defined, maybe 10-12%. Then do a careful bulk.

I think it's also harder to lose fat the closer you become to 6-pack territory (that's my excuse anyway :)

I agree greg, I'd say get to sub 13% % fat, which isn't that hard and then get some muscle on you.

I'd say you'll need to lose about 2 stone to start to see your abs!

I don't think getting down to 125lbs would be wise? an 18.5 BMI would make him underweight aswell?

Damn right it wouldn't be wise, but he asked how much fat he'd have to lose to give him "nice slim abs". Does anybody know if he's subtracted his bodyfat from his actual weight? Just looks like he weight more like 12½ stone, not 11 stone.

Doesn't souind like you tok his height into account. Lelloman's 5' 9", so that in mind, he's unlikely to be 12½ stone based on those pics. I'd say 11 stone was accurate.

Lello, based on your pics there, I'd say you need to lose between 15-20 lbs to start seeing some definition in your midsection. At that stage with your frame, I'd say you could gain a good 5-8 lbs of muscle with the equipment you have at home, and a solid 10-15 lbs, possibly 20 over six months to a year if you went to a gym/bought some equipment so you had more weight to throw around!

You're certainly on the right track at the moment to be trimming the excess and setting yourself up nicely for some of the solid stuff! :)

Hi Anthony thanks for that but when you said lose between 15-20lb is that weight or bodyfat that you are on about??
I know that 1lb fat is roughly the same amout as a coffee mug as shown previously in the post and going by that i have 7 "mugs" worth ie 7lbs of fat round my midsection so 15-20 lb seems like a lot to lose as i dont want to be stick thin which is what would appear to be the case losing that much.

I am still essing around with the weights tying to get the right amount of wkouts this week im doing mon wed fri and see how it affects me and then next week i might do mon wed fri sat and see if i hve the same, better or worse results.

Given your estimation if i need to lose 15-20lb is another 12wks a realistic target??

And does my body look better/different to the pics i posted a few moths bk can u tell i have lost weight?

Although it look slike it fat is stroed everywhere, and will not be lost in just one place. As a man we tend to carry fat a bit betterm hence we don't get cellulite. As I understand it, fat is stored inside and under muscle, and around organs. Your midsection is the most obvious place that fat is stored.

On my belly I have perhaps 1-2lbs of fat to lose, but I'd probably need to lose 5-6lbs overall to get this down.

Hi Mate

As greg said, you may have around 7 lbs of fat on your stomach, but you'll need to lose twice that or more in scale weight to shift enough fat from all over your body to drop that 7 lbs from your stomach.

Have a look at Alex here. In the first pic, he's nearly 15% bodyfat, and starting to show the very first faint outlines of a six pack. 15% isn't alot of bodyfat, as you can see, he's certainly not fat to start, and still leaner than most.

But to actually drop enough fat to show off a six pack, he had to lose a stone of fat. To look at him at the start, you wouldn't think he had a stone to lose, but as greg said, fat is stored all over, so basically, take what you think you need to lose, and double it, then you'll be in the ball park!

On the upside, it means you'll be much more defined all over!

With your current stats, if you stick to the diet with minimal discretion, 12 weeks is an acheivable target to lose that much I'd say.

Keep it up!

Anthony

Cheers Ant,
Im going to put the cat among the pigeons now i can tell. But a friend of mine lost a lot of weight but he did weights 3 times a week and on the inbetween days did cv workout on a cross trainer and lost weight quite quickly.

Obviously this is because he burned off fat and muscle at the same time and therefore lost weight at a higher rate.

I understand doing the weights maintains muscle and burns just bodyfat but if i someone wasnt bothered about losing muscle and fat and just got slim first by reducing there overall bodyfat and muscle, then did weights and started to bulk up what is the difference?

Nothing wrong with that at all. Some people hold onto muscle better than others, and there's more than one way to skin a cat!

Picking specifically on the muscle loss issue, the difference is, for every pound you lose, you make it harder and harder to lose bodyfat as your metabolism drops by anything up to around 75 calories per pound, when you do lose weight your body shape is different, i.e. if you were a pear shape before, with the muscle loss now, you'll be a smaler pear shape, and lastly, you're now at a dissadvantage when you do want to add muscle, starting at a lower starting point.

So when you do lose fat, you want to hold on to all the muscle you can, and work hard on gaining a pound or two if possible

It's actually not that bad if you have plenty of muscle in the first place, but if you don't, it's going to make the issue even worse.

The other difference of course is the time investment, i.e. you're spending twice as much time to get to the same end result.

Keep it up!

Hi guys,
I have had a manic last few weeks with hardly any time to get any exercise in and as a result i have suffered a minor drwaback. Thankfully my training courses have stopped now so i get back into a routine. And somehow my stats havent been knocked to badly they are currently as follows :-

Weight 155.2ln
Body Fat 26.8lb
Bodyfat 17.0%
Water 59.8%
BMI 23

so im only 2lb off my best weight since the start of the programme so i starting afresh now everything has settled down and giving myself 18 weeks rather than 12 as i dont think i will lose what i need in 12wks.

Firstly i want to ask 2 things.

1. As u will see i use a mygym which gives me a great wkout and love using it but i have got the offer of 2 extra bits of equipment. The first being push up bars which if used i would have the bars on the floor the floor and my feet on my bed so my body was elevated as i reckon this would really push me. Is this a good exercise to do and what does it wrk?

The 2nd is a gym ball which i think may be better than an ab roller formy abs as i can go further back and stetch my abd even more giving them a better wkout??
So what do u guys think about those 2 little additons??

My aim is to lose roughly 1lb in weight per wk which would mean im losing at least 1lb of fat per week so over 18wks i would lose betwenn 18-23lb bodyfat because going by Anthonys method i reckon by the rough calculation of a mug being 1lb bf ive got 9lb to lose but Anthony says if thats the case to visibly lose i actually need to double that figure.

Also wanted to ask the guys on here that have stuck to a plan and significantly reduced there stomachs say by 10cm etc If you followed a plan for 12wks did u find that for the 1st 6wks you didnt lose much off oyur stomach because you were losing fat from everywhere else fist then the 2nd 6weeks you started losing a lot more off the stomach say for example wks 1-6 you lost 3cm then wks 7-12 you lost 7cm??

Also roughly what order does the fat come off in?? I know75% is on my stomach and that is the last place it comes off but what about other areas such as pecs and the old bingo wings.

Cheers guys hope you can help me out with couple of questions
