I hope this happens before I go to Oz, as the thought of not having a mobile in the Outback is a bit disconcerting
I took my phone travelling with me, and used it for emergency email checking mainly. Called my mum on xmas day as I couldn't get my phone card to work, £40!.
You can get awesome phone cards in NZ and Aus that work out to around 0.4p/minute, they seem to never run out. It might be prude to suggest that you might not have phone signal in the outback, but that's unlikely.
I think Three are doing a phone that doesn't charge you to receive calls abroad, and you can make cheap international calls too. Another option if you are there for a while is to buy a SIM card, and use that with an international phone card. Texting usually doesn't cost that much more.
If you have access to a PC look into using skype, almost all internet cafes have a headset and a copy of skype you can run.

shit didn't think it would cost me that much. I wasn't plannig on using it all the time while I'm there - think it might be worth buying a sim card to put in my phone while I'm there, espcialy since you get so many Aussie $ to the pound (I'll be rich when I get there!)
Unless you're seriously wadded I wouldn't use it all the time :)
I think the max rate on mine was about £1.20/min, it depends on the country. It costs almost the same to receive calls too. Aus and NZ will be a bit cheaper. Phone cards and skype is the way forward, especially when you constantly need to beg for money like I did :)
My £40 was when I was in Peru, so that was top rate. Though being able to call my mum from machu picchu was quite cool, "Hello, where are you?", "I'M IN MACHU PICCHU!".
