I shave my head myself. I do it every 4 weeks to a grade 1. It's quick, it's simple, it's cheap, it's very low maintenance. I don't have to think about my hair.

Plus it looks good. I'm receding, (although not thinning yet) and it just seems to suit me. I have been shaving it for about 7 years now.

If you usually have your hair cut so it is shorter on the back and sides, and slightly longer on the top, then as your hair grows, it will remain shorter on the back and sides, and slightly longer on the top.

When you shave your head to the same grade all over, it will stay at the same length all over as it grows back, which is why many people may say that it never looks right and possibly even a bit shit.

The grade system goes from numbers 1 to 8. Each number is a measurement in eighths of an inch. So grade 4 is half an inch long and grade 8 is one inch long.

If you're metric, very approximate conversions would be:

1 = 3 mm
2 = 6 mm
3 = 10 mm
4= 13 mm

My kit has grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8.

I have a friend with very thick, bushy hair. At first he was concerned about having it shaved so we worked our way down the grades. 6 and 8 did nothing. He ended up having a grade 2. A grade 2 on him looked a lot different to a grade 2 on me.

You'd be surprised how many guys there are out there, who, although they don't shave their hair, have hair that is less than an inch long.

Looking at the attachment combs in my kit, and having learned through personal experience, the big difference in appearance is between grade 1 and grade 2.

The difference between grades 2, 3 and 4 is nothing. To be honest if you're thinking of having a grade 4, you might as well go for grade 2.

When your hair is this short it grows quickly. My hair, in the 4 weeks I allow it to grow, goes from a grade 1 to just over a grade 4.

I'd say shave it to grade 2. If it looks naf don't worry. Before you know it you'll be about grade 6 and then you could probably have it styled a little bit.

Try once. If you hate it don't do it again. The effects aren't permanent and they don't last long. It won't be the end of the world.

Just in case you want a woman's point of view. I personally think shaved heads are very attractive and depending on whos shoulders they are on, they can be really sexy too! I bought my boyfriend a Headblade Razor which is specially designed for shaving your head....he loves it. He even lets me have a go at shaving him (when I'm good). I got it on a website called body4real. GO FOR IT!

Am having this mad temptation to shave my hair off - probs wouldn't go further than a grade three, tho a two is a possibility, but the biggie is what if I hate it?! A haircut that is a bit too short is manageable, cos the style is still there, but a head shave is a completely different kettle of fish!

I think the temptation is there cos mine is a bit too long at the mo, and it a pain to keep in check :-/

You shave, or shaved your head? What was your initial reaction when you did it?

Shaved it off right to the skin a few years ago (then grew it back even longer afterwards). There were a lot of reasons why i did it, mostly less maintenance and hygiene and my hair at the time was nearing shoulder length. And when it came down to it, i probably won't cut it that short ever again unless i'm balding. I'd keep it shorter than you'd normally have it but long enough that you can style it.
I did a grade 5-6 yesterday all over since i messed cutting my hair up early on and for me it's too short as it is (I have typically thick hair). Hair grows about 0.4mm a day, so i wouldn't recommend cutting it too short.

EDIT: Only realised that this is an old thread... (slaps self)

In the end I just swapped hairsdressers, and she said that to either go too long, or too short would emphasise any thinning bits (my temples), so suggested I just went a bit shorter than I was having it cut before.

Much better, but might yet go for a random head shave one day - just to see what I look like!

Earlier this year I had a lot of hair, got bored and shaved the lot off. Scary at first but everyone loved it and its miles easier to maintain, saves me ages in a morning! Do it myself now and save a fortune!
