They probably are a bit more gruesome than the Saw movies but then how to you grade that sort of thing? If Saw was too much then Hostel would be beyond your tolerance level. In a way that's not the issue though - as they are not really meant for enjoyment in the "lets see someone getting chopped up for fun" kind of way. I think we are meant to be horrified and scared aren't we? If not then it's step one to being a serial killer!

I thought Saw 3 in particular was worse than Hostel. I think The Hills Have Eyes was worse than Hostel actually.

I didn't think Hostel was too bad - the eye was the only really bad bit in it.

It's odd though isn't it to grade stuff like that! How many fingers chopped off before it gets too much etc. Gruesome is gruesome in lots of ways. I think it's more watchable/unwatchable depending on the ideas behind the film....sometimes you are made to feel sick that you are even in the theatre and other films will really confront our attitude to violence or just scare us in the "right" sort of way.

Yep, the hills' had some naught bits in it.... thought the drill and the achilles cutting was proper cruel in Hostel though!

Yes I suppose different things seem worse to different people. I found the bit in The Hills Have Eyes where the dad is burning to death really bad, but I wasn't that phased by most of Hostel. I mean, I wouldn't like it happening to me, but it's not like their heads were exploding or someone was cutting their stomachs open and pulling their guts out like I've seen in other films.

Saw it last night.

It was alright, it wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad.

I actually don't think the torture bits were as bad as the previous one, though one scene in particular was extremely difficult to watch and one particular thing towards the end was VERY cringe-inducing.

I felt it ended too abruptly though, and I would have liked to see a bit more of a resolution.
