mine is thinking of bringing one in.

won't affect me as I usually dress quite smartly, imo ... but mates are up in arms because they're strictly jeans / tshirts guys ...

i see a storm brewing ...

Mon-Thurs: smart (trousers, shirt, shoes)
Fri - casual
We do not wear a tie, only if we have a meeting with a client
If the MD is away, casual anyday

Some people forgot what day the MD was back from his holidays and he went 'mental' when he saw people in jeans, t-shirts, etc.

Work in finance, and have really strict dress code: fully suited and booted at all times. Even loosening of ties is not allowed. You get used to it: I'm quite into doing the whole cufflinks, posh knotted tie, smart shoes thing. Its a shock if your'e not used to it though, esp if your company is going to introduce a dress code. What do you wear now? What's the proposed code?

he he

i went on a training course ( in Nottingham) with one chap who never wears anything other than t-shirts .
the place was really strict.

they were shitting themselves that the boss would see him so they gave him a shirt and tie to wear for the duration of the course.

I would hate to work somewhere like that but sometimes the attitude of my colleagues depresses me ... they look like scarecrows, some of them ...

Sounds like my kind of place. It depends on the work, we could get away with casual wear unless we have a client meeting but it is not very professional.

Most people at my work place, do not even wear a suit, just dark trousers and a light shirt. There are only a few of us, who wear a suit (minus the tie). Girls at my workplace, love a man in a suit - lucky me.

Lasses at my work go for blokes in suits - it's one advantage!

Art - what's the proposed dress code then?

well that is the question ...
I work in a University so it's complicated

can you ask academics/researchers to wear the same as admin staff ?

staff who meet the general public need to present a certain image .., does everyone need to follow suit ?

personally, I would like folks to just look respectable.

but that's very hard to define ...

a shirt with a collar ?
not jeans ?
not training shoes ?

Shit, I see what you mean! At least with my work the dress code is so strict you do at least know exactly what is and is not acceptable. Though my section boss takes imposing it to stupid extremes, there's no ambiguity in it, and everyone has to sign up to it when they join the firm, so you can't argue. I think everyone does look totally professional and businesslike and you don't have to vet items of clothing to assess them for work-suitability or lack of! Is it all threatening to get a bit militant?

they've tried before ... but it always falls on the same thing ...'

certain sections say "well, will you pay for me to look the way you want me to ?"

and the Uni's answer is (normally) NO
