The use of mobiles on planes flying in European airspace has been given approval by UK regulator Ofcom.
It has issued plans that will allow airlines to offer mobile services on UK-registered aircraft.
BBC
And any airline that permits their use is strictly off my list !

You can get them on gadget sites for pretty cheap I'm sure - though I'm pretty sure they're illegal

Most long haul airlines these days have in armrest satellite phones in every seat or they have a 'payphone' at the back on some planes.
So you can call out on anywhere in the world anyway so don't see the big deal....some airlines you can email to / receive at your seat on the seatback TV.
I fly loads each year longhaul & i've never actually seen anyone using one though!
