thanks guys!! I usually work to a strict regime wrt reps, but mucked it up a bit with the change in programme..
I had a question re. my other workout - Im finding grip to be an issue for my dbell deadlifts - i have small hands and 16kg in each hand gets difficult! Any tips? i was thinking of trying using my rugby gloves..
What is the problem - the "knurling" of the bar ripping your palm - I get this or your grip?
When i get back to the top of the deadlift i find it hard to maintain grip, perhaps because the handles roll a bit- i have to remove my wedding ring because it rubs in too much - and im getting calouses there (doesnt bother me in itself) but yeah it hurts a bit... i was thinking gloves, or bringing a bowl of chalk weightlifter style! ;-) seriously though ive never used gloves before so just wondering it it would help.
To be honest, the only things you need for grip are chalk and practice!
Gloves will actually hinder your grip as you are putting an extra layer of material in the way, making it even harder.
Get some weightlifting chalk or climber's chalk. This can be either loose, in a chalk ball or in liquid form. I used to use liquid chalk because some gyms can be fussy about powder chalk. Fortunately now I belong to a gym that actually has weightlifting chalk available.
I am also a climber, so I when my liquid chalk ran out, I just used my climbing chalk. For weightlifting purposes, liquid chalk is fine. You can order it online - I notice that amazon.co.uk stocks it, for example. You only need to use a small, penny-sized blob.
Aside from chalk, the fact is that your grip will improve and deadlifting is one of the best ways to improve grip! So just carry on doing what you are doing.
